VFS Global in the UK: how it works for visa applicants
What VFS Global does for embassies in the UK, how appointments, biometrics and passport return work, and how to avoid scams.
VFS Global is a private company that many embassies use to collect visa applications. In the UK its centres are used by several Schengen countries and others. VFS does not make the visa decision. The embassy does.
What VFS does and does not do
- Takes your appointment booking, checks that the file looks complete, collects your fingerprints and photo, and sends your passport to the embassy.
- Offers extra paid services such as SMS tracking, courier return, and premium or prime-time appointments. These are optional.
- Cannot approve, speed up or influence the decision. A complete, honest file is the only thing that helps.
Step by step
- 1. Open the official VFS Global website, choose "United Kingdom" as where you live and the country you are applying for.
- 2. Create an account and book your appointment at a centre (for example London, Manchester or Edinburgh, depending on the country).
- 3. Fill in the visa form, pay the visa fee and the VFS service fee, and print the appointment confirmation.
- 4. Go to the appointment with your original documents and copies. You give your biometrics there.
- 5. Track your application and collect or receive your passport back as chosen.
Stay safe
- Only use the official VFS website that you type or find through the embassy page. Check the address carefully.
- VFS appointments are free to book. Do not pay anyone who says they can sell you a slot.
- Never share your login or passport scans with strangers on social media.
